You are scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest and find yourself admiring those stunningly designed bedrooms that look like they are straight out of a magazine. You then try to replicate it only to find yourself overwhelmed with options, decisions and costs. The truth is, unless you are an interior designer, it is incredibly difficult to remember to consider every little detail that goes into creating the perfection. However, there are things you can do to make your life a whole lot easier. We have put together a small cheat sheet for you that will guide you through some important elements of the process. It is not the only way, of course, but it is easy to execute on your own.
Step 1: Start with clean walls.
One of the common mistakes many home owners make is selecting a paint color or a wallpaper that’s already imposing. Strong colors, textures and design on the walls require a trained eye to select the perfect furniture and accessories. It also limits you in your choices of these items, so can result in higher costs. Lighter, cleaner wallpaper or paint color give you the space to be creative. You can set the tone of the room with wall art, with bedding, with lighting – your options are endless.
Don’t forget to do some research prior to buying paint. Different types are suited for different purposes and different households. For example, satin is easier to clean, so is a more practical choice for families with kids.
Step 2. Select the perfect bed.
The bed is a centerpiece of your bedroom. Sounds obvious, right? However, it is crucial that you buy the right bed as it will set the tone to the bedroom design. This is when you ask yourself the question: “What is my interior design style?” Do you want your bedroom to be modern? Contemporary? Boho? Farmhouse? There are so many options. The underlying criteria is that it has to be good quality to look chic. By the way, headboards are back in. This was a huge trend in home design in 2016 and is going strong in 2017.
Make a statement with your bed choice. Try to bold with the color or the materials. Don’t be afraid to experiment. If you are hesitant, however, go with a simple, but high-quality bed and decorate it with throw pillows and blankets.

Step 3. Maximize your storage space
Your bedroom design will never look chic if it is messy. However, we live and move at such high pace that often times cleaning is the last thing on our minds. That’s why you have to focus on creating a space that’s as easy to maintain as possible. If your bedroom is large, creating storage space will be much easier. If you are restricted in space, you will have to be creative and think of every item in the room and how it can be utilized for hidden storage. For example, don’t just get a regular bedroom bench. Get one with a storage.

Step 4: Go with hardwood floors and an area rug
This is not to say that you can’t create an effortlessly chic bedroom design with a carpeted floor. However, hardwood floors are easier to clean, plus, you can change elements of your interior design by simply swapping out the area rug. For example, in winter you can go with faux fur for a cozier, but still chic feel. In summers, you can replace it with a lighter rug in brighter colors.
An area rug is your chance to add an element of elegance and sophistication to your space. Therefore, we recommend to either select a bold color or a geometric pattern on your rug (those are very much in trend, by the way).

Step 5. Time to accessorize.
You now have a solid base to apply finishing touches to your bedroom design. This is where all your restraint in wall colors and smart planning of storage space will pay off big times. For an effortlessly chic look, browse through items that look expensive, yet are slightly understated. For example, you can go with a very basic picture frame structure-wise, yet use it to add a golden accent by painting the frame. Select a clock that will make a statement, yet seamlessly fit into the overall room design.

Use wall art or a set of picture frames to add a pop of color to your space. Your options here are practically limitless. Even if your bedroom is small, be bold and go with an oversized painting.

Add chicness to your bedroom design with throw pillows and blankets. Mix colors and patterns for a more sophisticated look. If you are not confident in your ability to mix and match, go with a simple rule: keep two out of three elements the same and play around with the third one. The three elements are: color, fabric and pattern. So, you can go with the same color and fabric, but get creative with the patterns. Or, same pattern and fabric but in different colors.
